Uttarakhand begins installing its first Glacial Lake Early-Warning System at Vasundhara Tal
Uttarakhand has started installing its first Glacial Lake Early-Warning System at Vasundhara Tal in Chamoli district to guard against Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The system will track water level, weather, snow depth, ground movement, subsurface temperature and water flow. A 22-member scientific team led by the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is setting it up with support from the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee. In 2023 the National Remote Sensing Centre identified 344 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, 13 of which the NDMA classified as high-risk.
