Tata Steel has brought hydroseeding technology to its West Bokaro Division in Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, treating more than 50 acres of mined land, nurseries and overburden dumps. Hydroseeding is a mechanised planting method in which a slurry of seeds, mulch, fertiliser, binders and soil conditioners is sprayed onto bare ground. The mulch holds moisture, shields seeds and checks soil erosion by wind and water. The method aids mine-land reclamation, slope stabilisation and rehabilitation of degraded overburden dumps, cuts down manual planting on risky slopes and allows quick coverage of large areas.
