Cyclone Arnab, classed as a very severe cyclonic storm, completed its landfall over the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. A cyclone is a large weather system rotating around a low-pressure centre, turning anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere; tropical cyclones form over warm seas and bring strong winds, heavy rain, storm surges and floods. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) grades North Indian Ocean cyclones by maximum sustained wind speed: Cyclonic Storm (62–88 km/h), Severe (89–117 km/h), Very Severe (118–166 km/h), Extremely Severe (167–221 km/h) and Super Cyclonic Storm (222 km/h or more). The name “Arnab” was proposed by Bangladesh under the WMO and UNESCAP naming system, whose list has 169 names from 13 countries.
