The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has released the Emissions Gap Report 2026, cautioning that keeping warming to 1.5°C without significant overshoot can no longer be achieved. Global greenhouse gas emissions dipped slightly to 58.4 GtCO₂e in 2025, though fossil-fuel CO₂ kept rising. G20 members, excluding the African Union, produced 76% of global emissions, and their emissions without land-use sectors grew 0.7% in 2025. For the smallest overshoot, emissions must drop by 18% (2030), 45% (2035) and 69% (2040) against 2025 levels. Large-scale CO₂ removal will be needed to bring warming back to 1.5°C by 2100.
