Tamil Nadu has moved to empower the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to recruit staff for 25 corporations, 145 municipalities and 479 town panchayats. The Assembly passed a Bill amending the TNPSC (Additional Functions) Act, 2022, widening its scope for this purpose. At present, urban local body recruitment is split among the Directorate of Municipal Administration, municipal commissioners and local selection committees. The change brings these appointments, including posts in Chennai Corporation, under one common TNPSC-led system once the Governor gives assent.
