The Tenkasi Forest Division has suggested widening its 'Golden Jackal Ambassadors' programme to cover conservation of the Madras hedgehog, known locally as mulleli. This nocturnal spiny mammal, Paraechinus nudiventris, lives in southern India and is classed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. Forest Department staff have photo-documented it in Alangulam, Sankarankovil, Sivagiri and Uthumalai in Tenkasi district. Under the plan, students, volunteers, local youth and villagers will be trained to spot and report threats to the hedgehog and other wildlife. A Forest Guard Brother or Forest Guard Sister will be named for schools and colleges to promote awareness, and Village Forest Committees will support conservation work.
