A policy guide titled Animals for Biodiversity and Health was released at COP17 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Yerevan, Armenia, to build animal welfare into biodiversity and public health policy. It urges tighter rules on capturing, transporting and trading wildlife, better habitat protection, wildlife corridors and stronger welfare safeguards. It also seeks a phase-out of high-risk livestock confinement systems and conservation of locally adapted, genetically diverse livestock breeds. Under the One Health approach, the guide connects animal welfare with biodiversity conservation, zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Separately, the State of Biodiversity Action report found the world is off track to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030.
