The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released the first-ever National Highways Green Cover Index (NH-GCI) 2025–26, prepared with ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). The index uses satellite data to measure the share of green canopy along National Highway stretches. High-resolution multispectral images from Resourcesat-2/2A (LISS-IV) are used, with Cartosat-2S for validation. The assessment covers about 30,000 km of highways in 24 states that are in the operation and maintenance phase, and the data is available publicly on the Bhuvan GIS platform.
