The Madras High Court has directed the removal of Prosopis juliflora, an invasive alien species, from Tamil Nadu.
- Native to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean, the plant was brought to India during the colonial era. It is a shrub or small tree of the family Fabaceae, a type of mesquite.
- It spreads quickly in arid and semi-arid areas, outcompetes native plants, draws heavily on groundwater, degrades soil and reduces biodiversity.
- The order seeks to restore native vegetation, recharge groundwater and protect biodiversity.
- Private landowners must clear the plants within 30 days; otherwise officials will remove them and recover the cost.
