To boost readiness for cyclones, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has introduced a new, interactive tool called the Cyclone Warning and Marine Weather Services Decision Support System (DSS). Running on a Web Geographic Information System (WebGIS), it maps storm tracks, wind speeds, rainfall alerts and storm surge data. It sends warnings tailored to specific locations to disaster management bodies, government agencies and ordinary citizens, helping with evacuation plans, prompt decisions and lowering disaster risk. The system was unveiled to mark the anniversaries of the landfalls of Cyclone Phailin in 2013 and Cyclone Hudhud in 2014.
