The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has got under way in Yerevan, Armenia. The meeting will take stock of global efforts to implement the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), agreed in 2022. The framework lays down 23 targets to be met by 2030, including the "30 by 30" target of protecting 30% of the planet's land and oceans. Priorities at COP17 include speeding up conservation, reviving ecosystems, sharper monitoring and raising funds for nature. Countries hope to gather at least US$200 billion each year by 2030 from all sources, of which US$30 billion a year is to be international biodiversity finance.
