Scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBFGR) have discovered a new freshwater fish species, Labeo kaage, in the Cauvery River basin of Karnataka. It was found in the Shivanasamudra stretch of the Cauvery in Mandya district. The name comes from “kaage”, the Kannada word for crow, after the fish’s dark body colour, and locals call it “kaage meenu”. It belongs to the dark-coloured Labeo group of the Western Ghats. The study also clarified the identity of Labeo nigrescens, the “Dark Labeo” first described in 1870; Labeo chekida and Labeo uru were found in Kerala in 2025.
