Kufri Jamunia: ICAR-CPRI's Biofortified Purple Potato to Tackle Hidden Hunger

Save

To fight hidden hunger, India has developed Kufri Jamunia, a biofortified, purple-coloured potato variety. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research–Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI) bred it and released it in 2024. Every 100 g of the potato supplies vitamin C at 42.75 mg, iron at 3.22 mg and zinc at 2.28 mg. It also carries anthocyanins, naturally occurring pigments that act as antioxidants. Because it adds key vitamins and minerals to a food people already eat every day, it can lift nutrition levels. Kufri Jamunia is well suited to farming in the North Indian plains, covering Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh as well as Chhattisgarh.
