The Union Cabinet cleared the continuation of the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP) from 2026–27 to 2030–31 with an outlay of ₹53,428 crore and renamed it the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Sahayata Yojana. NSAP began on 15 August 1995 to support poor households, in keeping with Article 41 of the Constitution. It will reach 3.20 crore beneficiaries through pensions for senior citizens, widows and persons with disabilities, plus family benefits. Eligibility for disability pension now starts at 40% benchmark disability instead of 80%, and the minimum age condition has been dropped. Central support for this pension rises to ₹375 a month up to age 79 and ₹625 a month from age 80.
