The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has withdrawn the 2025 version of the seismic code (IS 1893) following concerns raised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The earlier standard, IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016, is applicable again across India.
A seismic code lays down building standards that help structures resist earthquake forces and limit damage. Under the code, India is split into four seismic zones: Zone II (Low), Zone III (Moderate), Zone IV (High) and Zone V (Very High). About 59% of the country's land area is considered earthquake-prone.
