Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have confirmed the discovery of a new species of marine eel from the Bay of Bengal. The species has been given the scientific name Bathymyrus perplexus. The finding adds a new member to the list of eel species known from Indian waters and points to the rich and still under-explored marine life of the Bay of Bengal. ZSI, which carries out surveys of animal life across the country, confirmed the eel as a distinct species after studying the specimens, strengthening the record of India's marine biodiversity.
