World Refugee Day was observed on 20 June to honour refugees and raise awareness about their protection and human rights. The theme for 2026 is "Solidarity with Refugees". According to UNHCR, about 117.3 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced by conflict, persecution and violence, and Sudan has become the largest displacement crisis. Nearly 71% of refugees are hosted by low- and middle-income countries, while the least developed countries host about 25%. The UN also notes that three in four displaced people live in regions highly exposed to climate-related hazards, which deepens their vulnerability.
