World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed every year on 8 May to honour humanitarian workers and volunteers who help people affected by conflicts, disasters and health emergencies. The theme for 2026 is 'Keeping Humanity Alive'. The date marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, who shared the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. In India, the Indian Red Cross Society carries out relief, blood donation and first-aid activities as part of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
