World Hunger Day was observed on May 28 to build awareness about global hunger and food insecurity. The 2026 theme is "The End of Hunger is in Our Hands." The day recognises the contribution of farmers, women, youth and communities towards a hunger-free world. It was started in 2011 by The Hunger Project, an organisation set up in 1977. As per the UN State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) Report 2025, global hunger has begun falling for the first time since 2017, yet about 673 million people (1 in 12) face chronic hunger and 2.6 billion cannot afford a healthy diet.
