World Hepatitis Day is observed on July 28 to promote awareness, prevention, testing, treatment and elimination of viral hepatitis. The date marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and developed its first diagnostic test and vaccine. The day was started by the World Hepatitis Alliance in 2008 and was recognised by the World Health Assembly in 2010 as a WHO global health day. Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, caused mainly by the Hepatitis A, B, C, D and E viruses. WHO aims to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. The 2026 theme is "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down".
