World Habitat Day falls on the first Monday of October each year, and was observed on 5 October 2026 with the theme "Adequate Housing for All". Designated by the United Nations (UN) in 1985, the day draws attention to the basic right to adequate shelter and the state of human settlements. More than 3 billion people lack adequate housing and over 1.1 billion live in informal settlements. The day also opens Urban October, which concludes with World Cities Day on 31 October.
