The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its State of the Global Climate 2026 report, warning that the planet's climate is "flashing red". Earth's energy imbalance is at a 65-year high, meaning more heat is being trapped than escapes to space. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are at record concentrations. Oceans take up about 90% of the excess heat, driving warming, sea-level rise and acidification. Global temperature is around 1.43°C above pre-industrial levels, fuelling heatwaves, floods and droughts.
