Save

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), in its State of Global Water Resources 2025 report, noted a persistent fall in groundwater in parts of India during 2022–2025, with over-extraction a key cause, meaning withdrawal exceeds recharge. Worldwide, 34% of groundwater observation stations showed below-normal to much-below-normal levels in 2025, up from 25% in 2024, measured against the 2001–2020 reference period. Northern India also logged below-normal terrestrial water storage in 2025.
