C. Joseph Vijay Sworn in as 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu; Announces Key Welfare Schemes

A Historic Transition: TVK Ends Decades of Bipolar Politics

On May 10, 2026, C. Joseph Vijay, the president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The ceremony, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, was administered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. This marks a paradigm shift in the state's political landscape, breaking the 60-year dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.

Immediate Executive Orders:

  • Electricity Relief: Implementation of 200 units of free electricity for domestic consumers.

  • Women's Protection: The formation of a Special Force for Women's Safety across the state.

  • Anti-Narcotics Drive: Establishment of specialized Anti-Drug Trafficking Units to curb substance abuse.

Political Support:

The TVK-led administration secured a stable majority with the support of 120-121 MLAs, including allies like the VCK and IUML, comfortably crossing the 118-seat requirement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally congratulated CM Vijay on his new role, signaling a collaborative approach between the Centre and the State. On May 11, CM Vijay formally took his oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
