A team of Uttar Pradesh officials visited Tamil Nadu to learn from its public health model that has sharply reduced maternal deaths. Tamil Nadu's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is about 35-40, against roughly 140 in Uttar Pradesh. The model rests on strong health infrastructure, efficient service delivery and constant monitoring. Its key features are district-level audits, MMR war rooms, standard treatment protocols and close attention to high-risk pregnancies, with the National Health Mission (NHM) and the Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project supporting implementation.
