The Union Budget 2026-27 proposed turning 15 archaeological sites into experiential cultural destinations, including Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur and Leh Palace. Adichanallur, on the Thamirabharani river in Thoothukudi district, is among India's oldest archaeological sites and sheds light on Iron Age life and early Tamil civilisation. It is famous for urn burials containing iron implements, ornaments and pottery, first unearthed in the late 19th century by Alexander Rea, and was the first site where the ASI built walk-through ramps over excavated trenches.
