UN Secretary-General's Women, Peace and Security report flags rising deaths and violence against women in armed conflicts

UN Women released the UN Secretary-General's report on Women, Peace and Security, which points to growing deaths of and violence against women and girls in armed conflicts. Over 37,000 civilians died in conflicts in 2025, and one in four was a woman or girl, a share that has doubled since 2021. Over 750 million women and girls were living no more than 50 km from active fighting, and 9,788 conflict-related sexual violence cases were verified by the UN in 2025. Women made up only 5% of negotiators across 57 peace processes, and none of the 13 ceasefire agreements explicitly banned such violence. In conflict-hit countries, women did five times more unpaid care work than men, and girls were 2.5 times likelier to be out of school.
