After the 2026 results, M.K. Stalin resigned as Chief Minister, sending his resignation to the Governor at Lok Bhavan; by convention he continues as interim CM until a new government takes office. Stalin lost Kolathur, becoming the fourth sitting Tamil Nadu CM to lose an election, after P.S. Kumarasamy Raja (1952), M. Bhakthavatchalam (1967) and Jayalalithaa (1996). TVK, founded in February 2024, won 108 seats with about 35% of the vote, beating MGR's 1977 debut share of 30.6%. This is only Tamil Nadu's second hung Assembly after 2006. Edappadi K. Palaniswami recorded the highest margin (98,110 votes), while Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan lost Tirupattur by one vote.
