The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution asking the Centre to scrap the 'Open-Column Method' for counting Backward Classes (BCs), Most Backward Classes (MBCs) and Denotified Communities (DNCs) in Census 2027. It wants the notified BC, MBC and DNC lists pre-loaded on the enumeration portal, so these groups are recorded the same way as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes rather than through self-declared caste entries. The resolution stressed that accurate caste-wise data is essential because OBC caste details have been left out of every census since Independence.
