TN Assembly resolution seeks Tamil as principal language of Madras High Court

Save
The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. Article 348(2) permits a State's official language in High Court proceedings with the President's prior consent. The resolution seeks Tamil for petitions, arguments and judgments, plus legal-Tamil and translation training for judges and court staff. A similar resolution was adopted on December 6, 2006, but the Supreme Court's Full Court declined it in 2012. Tamil was declared a Classical Language on October 12, 2004.
