Tamil Nadu Overtakes Gujarat as India’s Top Marine Fish Producer in 2025

Marine Production 2025: Tamil Nadu Claims the Top Spot

The ICAR-CMFRI Annual Report 2025 has revealed that Tamil Nadu became India’s leading marine fish producer in 2025 with an output of 6.85 lakh tonnes, surpassing Gujarat. Despite cyclonic challenges, TN recorded a 1% growth in landings.

Key Data from CMFRI:

  • Gujarat's Decline: Slipped to second place (6.43 lakh tonnes) due to a 15% drop caused by adverse weather and fishing bans.

  • National Growth: India's total marine fish production rose 3% to 35.7 lakh tonnes.

  • Top Resource: The Indian Oil Sardine recorded a decade-high growth of 13%, becoming a key resource.

  • Economic Value: Marine fish landings generated a total retail value of Rs. 97,702 crore.

For TNPSC aspirants, this is a major 'Tamil Nadu Geography and Economy' update highlighting the state's leadership in the Blue Economy.
