The Tamil Nadu government has decided to open a 'safe house' in every district to protect individuals and families at risk of, or affected by, 'honour' killings, caste killings and related violence. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu said the move follows the Supreme Court judgment in Shakti Vahini vs. Union of India and representations from survivors and activists. The shelters are seen as a lifeline, especially for women. Tamil Nadu had already set up special cells with a 24-hour helpline in 2018 to take complaints of harassment or threats against inter-caste couples.
