Tamil Nadu will begin rare genetic disease screening for newborns, covering nearly 4.5 lakh babies born in government hospitals. They will be screened for seven rare genetic disorders using a hub-and-spoke model. The conditions include congenital hypothyroidism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, galactosemia and biotinidase deficiency, along with three other rare diseases. Early detection is intended to enable timely treatment and prevent lifelong disability.
