Hydrological Public Infrastructure: Centre and State Sign Bilateral MoU Extending Comprehensive Piped Water Grids Until December 2028
Accelerating the deployment of clean drinking water networks across its primary farming segment, the Government of Tamil Nadu has executed a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for the extended rollout of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0. Tied directly to the Union Cabinet's post-2026 extension mandate, the strategic inter-governmental accord channels high-volume financial liquidity to construct sustainable, clean tap infrastructure across all left-out rural habitations.
The December 2028 Extension Target and Multi-Village Infrastructure Engineering
The expanded hydrological framework sets explicit capital infusion tracks and engineering metrics to manage rural distribution pipelines:
- The December 2028 Extension Horizon: To resolve difficult pipeline installations in topographically challenging areas, the new MoU formally **extends the active execution framework until December 2028**, ensuring uncompromised pipeline access.
- Immediate ₹2,177 Crore Central Disbursement: Following the formal treaty validation, Tamil Nadu will initially receive a substantial **₹2,177.27 crore from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS)** to launch the JJM 2.0 implementation phase.
- Stellar Phase-1 Performance Metrics: During the initial block, the state achieved remarkable numbers, delivering **46.71 lakh household Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), directly benefiting nearly 1.86 crore rural residents**.
- The Multi-Tier Scheme Framework: To build absolute drought resilience, the active engineering phase maps out **45 comprehensive Multi-Village Schemes (MVSs), retrofitting modifications across 56 Combined Water Supply Schemes (CWSSs), and 21,258 decentralized Single Village Schemes (SVSs)** across rural blocks.
