Tamil Nadu launches State-wide Salt Reduction Mission as average intake hits 7-8 grams a day

Save

Tamil Nadu has announced a State-wide mission to cut down salt consumption among people. While the WHO advises less than 5 grams of salt a day, the average intake in Tamil Nadu is 7-8 grams, and nearly 88% of salt in the South Indian diet is added during home cooking. A urine-sample survey across the State will measure consumption, and government kitchens will follow standards to reduce salt gradually. The State will also examine low-sodium substitutes and offer counselling through Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam and Health and Wellness Centres.
