Tamil Nadu has launched a State-wide campaign to plant one crore palm seeds to strengthen the bunds of waterbodies and prevent soil erosion. The drive was inaugurated at Devariyambakkam village in Kancheepuram district by the Minister for Rural Development-Panchayat Raj and Water Resources. It aims to aid groundwater recharge, soil conservation and the production of value-added palm products. Palm trees have deep, strong roots that bind soil, improve water infiltration and help conserve groundwater, and they are drought-tolerant, growing well in dry areas with little water.
