The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister announced that the proposed airport at Parandur will not go ahead, mainly because of its likely impact on farmland and human settlements. The State will look for other locations for Chennai's second airport after examining technical feasibility. Meanwhile, a new Terminal 5, with an approach road and a flyover, will be built at the existing Meenambakkam airport together with the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Chennai Airport now handles about 30 million passengers a year; capacity is expected to reach 35 million after Terminal 3 and 55 million after Terminal 5.
