The Tamil Nadu government is weighing the abolition of the State Planning Commission (SPC), set up about 55 years ago in the early 1970s to assess State resources and plan their balanced use. Posts of Vice-Chairperson and full-time members have stayed vacant since the previous team resigned, and subject-specific expert committees are being considered instead. In 2017 the government proposed replacing the SPC with the State Development Policy Council, formed in 2020 and renamed SPC in 2021. The Department of Economics and Statistics and DEAR also provide policy advice.
