Tamil Nadu has introduced a Bill proposing an Environmental and Social Welfare Cess on the sale of alcoholic liquor, by amending the Tamil Nadu Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, 2006.
The cess will fund recycling, safe disposal and reuse of liquor bottles; rehabilitation, de-addiction and livelihood support for families affected by alcoholism; awareness campaigns on alcohol harm and bottle disposal; and protection and restoration of forests, wildlife and ecology.
