Tamil Nadu's election history records several landmark changes. In 1967 the DMK defeated the Congress, and delimitation raised Assembly seats from 206 to 234. The 1971 poll ran over three days, while in 1977 all 234 seats voted on one day for the first time; the State reverted to two phases in 1980, and 1984 saw the first year-end election. 1996 was the last ballot-paper election, with Modakurichi voting on June 1 because of 1,033 candidates. EVMs were used in all 234 seats in 2001. In 2016, polling in Aravakurichi and Thanjavur was postponed over large-scale voter bribery.
