Tamil Nadu has adopted a single-use haemodialysis policy to make dialysis safer for patients in government hospitals. Under it, dialysers will no longer be reused for patients treated in public health facilities. Single-use dialysers offer better efficiency, improved safety and a lower risk of infection. Telangana, Karnataka and Gujarat already follow similar policies. Globally, about 90% of haemodialysis in the US, 85% in Europe (excluding eastern regions) and 98% in Australia and New Zealand uses single-use dialysers, whereas in India's government sector reusable dialysers still account for about 70–80% of treatments.
