The Status of Policing in India Report (SPIR) 2026, brought out jointly by Lokniti–CSDS (Centre for the Study of Developing Societies) and Common Cause, draws on a survey of 8,306 citizens in 16 States, with a focus on cybercrime and police redressal. Cybercrime cases climbed 17.9%, reaching 1,01,928 in 2024 against 86,420 in 2023, even as total registered crime dropped by 6%. Roughly 13% of respondents had been hit by cybercrime in the previous two to three years, and 54% of them lost money through fraud. Only 49% of victims lodged a formal complaint, and 27% of complainants said they had to bribe the police.
