Stanford University researchers created the first worldwide map of rare continental mantle earthquakes, which originate in the mantle usually more than 80 km below the crust. Studying over 46,000 earthquakes recorded since 1990, they identified 459 such events, concentrated mainly beneath the Himalayas and the Bering Strait. Sn and Lg seismic waves were used to separate mantle quakes from crustal ones.
