South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone Notified: Impact on Tamil Nadu Rail Network
South Coast Railway Zone: New Administrative Framework
In a major administrative overhaul, the Union Government officially notified the South Coast Railway (SCoR) zone in May 2026. Headquartered in Visakhapatnam, the new zone will be operational from June 1, 2026. This 18th railway zone integrates the Vijayawada, Guntur, and Guntakal divisions, which will lead to a significant realignment of divisional boundaries with the Southern Railway (covering Tamil Nadu) to optimize operational efficiency and logistics.

- Infrastructure: Focus on enhancing passenger traffic between Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and Tamil Nadu.
- High-Speed Corridors: Proposed 'High-Speed Diamond' corridors to link Chennai with Amaravati and Hyderabad.
- Logistics: The reorganization aims to transform the region into a maritime and industrial logistics hub.
