Bird watchers in Chennai have reported a rare visitor: a Japanese Sparrowhawk (Tachyspiza gularis) was spotted at the Adyar Estuary. According to records, this is only the third time the species has ever been documented anywhere in India, which makes the Chennai observation a notable addition to the country's bird list. Despite being so rarely seen in India, the raptor is not globally threatened; the IUCN Red List places the Japanese Sparrowhawk in its Least Concern category.
