In Nagercoil, the Chief Minister unveiled a statue of Ponnappa Nadar, a freedom fighter and Congress leader. The memorial recognises the part he played, together with Marshall Nesamani, in the movement that resulted in Kanniyakumari district being merged with Tamil Nadu. Kanniyakumari joined the then Madras State, now Tamil Nadu, in 1956 following the States Reorganisation. In a separate event, at Uprashtrapati Bhavan the Vice-President released revised editions of the Constitution of India in Tamil and Gujarati.
