The Pallikaranai marshland in Chennai logged its highest-ever breeding numbers for several non-native birds during the 2026 migratory season. Jacanas rose to 201 in August and 185 in September, the highest since they returned to the marsh in 2014. Fulvous whistling ducks hit a record 1,155 in September, against just 68 in September 2025. Pied mynas were also recorded, with 40 birds and at least 23 hatchlings in September. Floating vegetation, organic waste and suitable water conditions may have created a favourable habitat for these species.
