The Government of India is establishing the country's first integrated plant based on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) at Kavaratti Island in Lakshadweep. OTEC is a renewable energy technology that generates electricity by using the temperature difference between warm surface sea water and cold water from the ocean depths. Setting up such a plant on an island is significant because remote islands depend heavily on costly conventional fuel, and OTEC offers a clean, continuous source of power drawn from the surrounding sea.
