Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary in Nuapada district of Odisha has been declared free of Maoist presence and is witnessing a sharp rise in leopard numbers, with officials estimating over 70 leopards. It is a proposed tiger reserve; a 2016 State census counted four tigers, but last year's national report found none. The sanctuary is the catchment of the Jonk river, a Mahanadi tributary, and also the source of the Sunder and Indra rivers.
