The National Green Tribunal approved the Great Nicobar Island infrastructure project subject to strict environmental compliance. The project comprises an International Container Transshipment Terminal, a township and a 450 MVA gas-and-solar power plant. The NGT cited its strategic value near the Malacca Strait and for the Act East policy. Over 16,000 coral colonies are to be translocated and monitored under the Island Coastal Regulation Zone Notification, 2019, and the tribunal found no major coral reef in the direct project area at Galathea Bay.
